about

Hi, my name is Sue Lerdahl, and I make small-batch handmade functional ceramics out of my East Sacramento home studio.

“Susu” is the nickname given me by my lovely sister, Ellen, who has been calling me that for some 30 years now. To me, the sound or sight of it means love, affection, comfort, compassion, silliness … all the things sisters share!

What is beautiful to me about ceramics is that it is an elegant yet humble art. To be able to make something that will give you delight when you are sharing with friends and family at your table — for me there’s a real joy in that. Other times, the making is about giving you something to enjoy in blissful solitude, as with a mug to help you start your day.

In shaping my pieces, I use (in various combinations) my potter’s wheel, plaster molds I have poured, and a huge slab roller.

For me there is a strong link between my ceramics work and the female journey. Wherever I am that day, I bring it all into the studio; the work engages my whole body, while the brain relaxes into a peaceful concentration. It’s physical and meditative, and I love it.

I hope that the love and care I put into my pieces will be felt by you as you hold that steaming mug of coffee or serve a gorgeous plate to someone you love.

With love,

SUSU
